When AMD showed off its pre-built small form factor liquid cooled gaming unit ‘Project Quantum’ with its dual Fiji GPU cores, it was unexpected to see that it will be using an Intel CPU. It is known that AMD’s Project Quantum is using Intel i7-4790K Devil’s Canyon processor. But AMD recently gave a clarification about its decision to swallow its pride by provide a CPU variant from its direct competitor.

The Red team said that its #1 job is to build great products, specifying that its real star is the Radeon Fury. They explained:
We have Quantum designs that feature both AMD and Intel processors, so we can fully address the entire market. I’m sure you’ve heard AMD leaders speak before about how we’re driving growth in the company and our key businesses, and that one of the key strategies we have for doing that is listening to customers.
You may have heard at the recent AMD financial analyst day that Lisa Su described Job #1 as “Build Great Products.” In the case of buyers for systems like Project Quantum, there is a clear preference for choice; they’re not interested in a narrow range of computing solutions – they want to pick and choose the balance of components that they want, that are hand-tailored in a world of off-the-rack suits.
With a product as compelling as R9 Fury, we are extremely pleased to enable as much success as we can. There is a range of technology options for CPU in Project Quantum… but the real star is Radeon Fury.
Fair enough!! From a user’s perspective, it is a welcoming change. While it’s not a surprise to see that AMD isn’t able to keep up with Intel for desktop processors for a while, but it does have its moments at times with graphic cards. One will be welcomed to credit AMD that at the very least it’s ready to provide the best of solutions for its userbase. Still, AMD provided a variant with its processing unit.
From a user’s perspective, it is a welcoming change.
